How to Deep Clean the Drain Line on Your Freeze Dryer
Proper maintenance of your Stay Fresh Freeze Dryer is essential for ensuring its longevity and optimal performance. One crucial aspect of care is keeping the drain line clean. Ideally, after every batch, you should clean the drain ( check out this blog on how to clean the drain after each batch). If the machine is not in use, drain valve and acrylic door should be kept open to allow the chamber and drain line to air dry completely.
However, accidents happen—some users may forget to remove moisture in the drain after a cycle, leaving food residues and moisture trapped inside. Over time, this can lead to mold growth in the drain line. In such cases, a deep clean is necessary.
Steps to Remove and Clean the Drain Line
To fully clean the drain line, you will need to disassemble it from your freeze dryer. Here’s how:
1. Access the Drain Line
Since the drain line is located on the right side of the freeze dryer, you will need to remove the right panel.
-
Remove the right panel:
- Remove the 12 screws on the side panel.
- Once removed, you will have access to the drain line.
2. Detach the Drain Line
- The drain line is connected to the chamber with a KF fitting (KF16).
-
Release the KF clamp, then carefully detach the drain line.
3. Clean the Drain Line
- Use a long tube brush and hot water/vodka to thoroughly scrub the inside of the drain line.
- Insert the pipe cleaner from the chamber side of the drain line, not from the opening side. This ensures that you effectively clean the inner tubing where moisture and residue can accumulate.
- Avoid scrubbing the ball valve’s interior, as the outer part of the valve is exposed to air and does not develop mold. Scrubbing too aggressively inside the valve may compromise its seal, leading to vacuum leaks.
-
Rinse the drain line completely before reassembly.
4. Reassemble the Drain Line
- Reattach the drain line to the chamber using the KF joint.
- Ensure the O-ring is properly seated between the joint before tightening the KF bracelet.
- Put back the right panel and the top panel.
